September 10-17, 2005 --
On Saturday, September 10, we departed Mystic at 0630, with the help of our good friend Larry Bogart who showed up at 0515 to cut our lines.
We put in a long 12-hr day motoring into Manhasset Bay, just outside New York. It was a pleasant cruise that ended with a gaslight dinner and fireworks on a warm, beautiful evening. Left at 0630 Sunday, 9/11, proceeded down the East River with the tide. Hell Gate was bubbling with strong currents that fortunately were with us, boosting our speed by 3 kts. It was a specatular trip past Manhattan on a clear, crisp day with no boat traffic.
We made such good time that we decided to proceed along the Jersey coast, ending at Barneget Bay, just below the picturesque lighthouse. We got another early start on Monday, cruised past Atlantic City, into Cape May, where we refueled and anchored for the night. Tuesday started early again, up the Delaware and to the Salem River, NJ, where we anchored in a quiet salt marsh. On Wednesday, we went through the C&D Canal, with the current, and regretably decided not to stop at Chesapeake City; it was only noon and we thought we should make more time. Even though the threat of Ophelia was behind us, we still weren't in cruising mode and felt we needed to keep pushing. We ended the day anchoring in a thunderstorm on the Sassafras River, Maryland in sight of Georgetown.
This turned out to be lucky, because that night we noticed the freezer wasn't working. The next morning we called Georgetown Yacht Basin, who gave us a slip while they did the repair.
We used their free bikes and rode to Galena, the small nearby Amish village, where we got homemade bread and fresh produce. We also took advantage of their pool (temperature was 100 degrees in the shade), electricity and water. We met other cruisers and local boaters, who gave us more ideas of places to visit in the Cheapeake. Repair done and a new bug screen made, we anchored back in the Sassafras to learn how to relax and become cruisers. |
